Arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation increases biomass of Euterpe edulis and Archontophoenix alexandrae after two years under field conditions Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Sgrott,Andressa Franzoi; Booz,Maristela R.; Pescador,Rosete; Heck,Teresinha Catarina; Stürmer,Sidney Luiz.
Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) of tree seedlings in the nursery is a biotechnological strategy to improve growth, survival after transplanting, biomass production and to reduce the use of fertilizers. Archontophoenix alexandrae and Euterpe edulis are palm species used in southern Brazil to produce the palm heart, the latter being included in the list of threatened species due to the overexploitation of its native population. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the effect of mycorrhizal inoculation on growth and physiological parameters of A. alexandrae and E. edulis. After germination, the seedlings were inoculated (AMF) or not (CTL) with AMF in the treatments. Values of chlorophyll content, biomass and shoot phosphorus were not...

Morphological and physiological adjustments of Brazilwood (Caesalpinia echinata Lam.) to direct solar radiation Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Mengarda,Liana Hilda Golin; Milanez,Camilla Rozindo Dias; Silva,Diolina Moura; Aguilar,Marco Antonio Galeas; Cuzzuol,Geraldo Rogério Faustini.
This study aimed to characterize the alarm and resistance phases of stress of Caesalpinia echinata under intense irradiance in order to better define its position on forest succession. The alarm phase was identified by rapid reduction in the maximum quantum yield of PSII primary photochemical reactions (ΦP0 = FV/FM) and Performance Index (PIABS) followed by total leaf abscission in the first week of exposure to direct sunlight. The new leaves grown showed recovery of chlorophyll a parameters, increase in blade thickness, elongation of the palisade and spongy parenchymas, higher water content, and reduction of specific leaf area. These changes were associated with the osmoprotector of sucrose and antioxidative of raffinose effects, which indicate an...

Variations in sugars and cyclitols during development and maturation of seeds of brazilwood (Caesalpinia echinata Lam., Leguminosae) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Borges,Igor F.; Barbedo,Claudio J.; Richter,Andreas A.; Figueiredo-Ribeiro,Rita de Cássia L..
Seeds of Caesalpinia echinata are tolerant to desiccation, keeping their viability up to 0.08 g H2O g-1 DM. When stored under laboratory conditions they lose their viability within one month, while under low temperatures germination ability is maintained during two years of storage. Here, we report on the variations of soluble carbohydrates, cyclitols and cyclitol galactosides in seeds of C. echinata during development and maturation, aiming for a better understanding of the involvement of these compounds in the maturation process and seed quality. Individual flowers were tagged on the day of anthesis and pods were collected directly from the branches from 32 to 59 d after anthesis (DAA). Seeds were also collected after shedding. The physiological maturity...
